Your very own drone

If you’re not new to video games and especially Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 then you will be aware that “drones” play an important part in the future regarding reconnaissance and strategic deployment.  Drones capture the imagination in gameplay and now you can capture all the excitement of owning your very own drone. Of course you won’t be using it to fight a futuristic enemy, but here are some of the things you can do for fun with the ultimate boy’s toy (and girls too!)

  • You can capture HD photos and video streamed and recorded to your smartphone
  • Have dogfights with your friends and play back the footage
  • Enable hover and trick flips
  • Have birds eye views from the air
  • Use auto pilot take off and land
  • Upload your videos to Utube and compare flights
  • Fly outside or in the home
  • Several control modes for beginner to expert
  • Store and share your flight data (time, speed, altitude)
  • Geolocate your flights and connect with others for the best flying spots

Parrot AR.Drone 2.0

One such model is the Parrot AR.Drone 2.0 from   The makers give a detailed account of the drones specs, and have an extensive website showing everything you need to know, even with video and photo shots of users flights.

The company say  The sky’s the limit for thrills and fun with the Parrot AR drone 2.0 – a quadrocopter with a built-in HD camera. Controlled by your iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch or Android smartphone, the drone will stream real time video from the camera (720p) onto your touchscreen. Connecting via a Wi-Fi signal created by the drone, the spectacular footage can be recorded onto a memory card in the drone and then uploaded onto YouTube. Smarter than its younger brother (1.0), the 2.0 is crammed with electrical measurement gizmos. It has on board a 1GHz processor to calculate data from the 3-axis magnetometer, 3-axis accelerometer, 3-axi gyroscope and 2 ultrasound sensors. All of this makes it nice and simple to fly, as it constantly levels itself. It has two flying modes, indoors or out, and has a protective hull for indoor flying to stop it from damaging your belongings with its four rotary blades. The connection to your smartphone allows augmented reality gaming, download apps to shoot baddies or compete against another Parrot drone. It will even perform a 360 degree flip on the touch of a button.”

I for one could envisage having many hours of fun with a drone like this, Prices are well below £300 and there is lots of other stuff you can add too. Not a bad price for what could be a great hobby.
